Born in December 1995, Jacqueline Katesi Kalange is a full-time artist based in Kampala, Uganda. She holds a Bachelor of Art and Industrial Design degree from Kyambogo University, Uganda.
Her entry artwork is part of a series of paintings under the theme “Women and Work”, in which she seeks to revitalize her protagonist subjects with elegance and composure. The series consists of four paintings entitled: The Rebirth, Romance, Fresh Start and Freedom.
“Through my practice, I’m not only trying to understand black women’s position in African homes and societies but to also indirectly confront stereotypes with an approach that seeks to create further discourse within the public, that may culminate into innovative ways of co-existence.
Furthermore, I am encouraging more women to practice self-care as a routine and not live up to other people’s expectations of who they should be if they don’t agree but rather choose to live up to that which gives them peace of mind.” – Katesi Jacqueline Kalange
